The album “Tonalibus L, M & N” offers 27 meditative improvisations by Ulrico in 3½ hours of uplifting music, at times with a touch of blues. Six of these are recordings of spontaneous cooperation with friends. Two feature Punnu Wasu (voice and mandolin), three Christina Braun (voice and violin), and one Karin Gsöllpointner (voice). Tonality of the month: ReachUp

The tonality of the month of October 2024 is ReachUp.

The tonality of this month is ReachUp, a partially anchored Reach heptatonality. It is also known as double harmonic / Gypsy / Hungarian minor. Characteristic for this tonality are its four half tone steps, two of them successive, and its two Reach steps or augmented seconds. Because of the Reach step high up in the lower tetrachord, its Tonalibus name became ReachUp. There being no further specification in that name for the upper tetrachord indicates the presence of the second Reach step, a regular one, in the upper part of this tonality. The tritone and major seventh help form the two Reach steps. And they contribute to balance the otherwise pronounced minor tendency of this tonality. This fascinating tonality appears some in Carnatic (South Indian) and Turkish music, less frequently in Jazz and Western classical music.

It offers 27 meditative improvisations by Ulrico in 3½ hours of uplifting music, at times with a touch of blues. The playlist “LMN sampler” presents ten of these pieces in 78½ minutes. Over recent months, Tonalibus monthly listeners on Spotify multiplied surprisingly after having hovered around a dozen, exceptionally briefly surpassing 20, to now over 900! They are spread all over the planet, many in USA, India, Canada, the UK, Australia, and Finland.

BTW, Ulrico got the inspiration to play the guitar flat on his knees more than 50 years ago in India from Jacques Dudon and just found a 2018 YouTube clip of his.

And, due to their special nature, “Extra” posts are not widely distributed, announced, or listed by Tonalibus, like “Misrepresentation to the public” of 3/6/2024.

Tonality of the month: PentaProLa / PentaIon

The tonality of the month of September 2024 is PentaProLa / PentaIon.

The tonality of this month is PentaProLa / PentaIon (pentatonic major), a Pro tonality and regular basic pentatonality. It is the common root of Lydian, Ionian, and Mixolydian — the so-called major tonalities. The pitch and interval selection in its octave corresponds to that of the raaga Bhoopali. This is one of the three most basic ones of Hindustani classical music. Besides the fundamental, it contains the major second, major third, quint, and major sixth (Sa, Re, Ga, Pa, Dha, Sa’). On the piano keyboard PentaProLa / PentaIon corresponds to the black keys with F# as fundamental.
