The tonality of the moment for winter 2025-2026 is PentaCor.

PentaCor is a Core tonality and a partially anchored basic pentatonality. It is the tonality of “Flashes of radiant cognizance” from September 2025, which becomes a new Tonalibus single release on December 22. PentaCor is also the foundation of “Let’s listen” / “Let’s talk” from June 2022, which modulates from PentaCor via HexaCorMix (with the major sixth) to LoReachUpMix (with the minor second). An alternate smooth modulation path is to ReachUpMix (with the major second) instead, as used in “Journey Around the Sun” from April 2021 (PentaCor via ReachUpMix to Dorian and back).

Core tonalities are a diverse collection of specific hepta-, hexa-, and pentatonalites with a common core. Though only partially or progressively anchored (with the exception of fully anchored BlueMix), they are most uniquely anchored in that they contain all four corners of the sound temple. Besides the fundamental or octave, these are the minor third, tritone, and major sixth. As a result of containing all four corners of the sound temple, they tend towards dissolving tonality. Thus they can open up more freedom in experiencing sound.

The addition of the quint to the four corners of the sound temple produces the pentatonality PentaCor. The quint strengthens its fundamental and anchors it in a more common sense of harmony and tonality.

The tonality of the moment for autumn 2025 is HexaBluNaReach.

HexaBluNaReach is a BluNa and Reach hexatonality.

Hexatonalities consist of six pitches to the octave. HexaBluNaReach contains no whole steps but three Reach steps (augmented seconds) and three halftone steps alternating with each other. BluNa indicates that it is a partial blue tonality (Blu) with an initial Reach step off the fundamental to the minor third, with the quint but no tritone. With the quint and the major third it includes the initial or most prevalent natural overtones (Na). BluNa thus indicates that both the major and minor third are present and generally no quart. Therefore the second Reach step leads from the major third to the quint over the middle of the scale, a quality shared with the Mid tonalities, which however don’t have the initial Reach step. Finally, the upper tetrachord of HexaBluNaReach features, as the name indicates, a regular Reach step, that is from the minor sixth to the major seventh.

All this gives this special tonality a unique symmetry overall and a remarkable equilibrium between major and minor. Its name could therefore also be minor major or major minor.

PentaMin / PentaEol, the tonality of the moment, is a fully anchored, regular basic pentatonality. The name PentaMin indicates that it is the common root of Phrygian, Aeolian, and Dorian, specifically with the minor seventh (and no sixth nor second). The second name, PentaEol, indicates that this pentatonality corresponds to Aeolian, as well as to Phrygian or Dorian, without any second or sixth. PentaMin / PentaEol is commonly known as pentatonic minor.

The tonality of the moment is PentaVibhas, a Reach tonality derivative or reduction. It consist of the fundamental, the minor second, major third, quint, and minor sixth (1-2-5-8-9-1). PentaVibhas is a derivative pentatonality that has recently emerged in Tonalibus improvisations and the recordings “Another day breaks” and “Vibhas dawn“. The pitch distribution of this derivative pentatonality is equivalent to the Indian Raag Vibhas / Bibhas (as you can see in the Tonalibus Raagas correlations tables in the Fidibus shop). For derivative tonalities there are no further details in the Tonalibus catalogue. PentaVibhas corresponds to ReachMin (Phrygian dominant) or ReachBal (Gypsy major) with no quart and no seventh, or to ReachNaMin or ReachNaBal with no tritone and no seventh.

The tonality of the moment is PentaPro / PentaNa — a Pro tonality, prime Na tonality, and clustered basic pentatonality. The name indicates that this is a penta- and Pro tonality (and that the upper trichord is with the minor seventh and no sixth). As Pro tonality, the lower tetra- or trichord is PentaMaj, i.e. wihout the regressive quart. The identifier Pro stands for progressive, Na for natural harmonics. As Na tonality, all pitches are primary or secondary harmonics or overtones. This gives this special tonality a very strong harmonic base.
