Characteristics

  • Hexatonality matrix: There are two common and two exceptional interval distributions within the octave of hexatonalities in the catalogue. The two common distributions are: 1) one Reach step, four whole steps, and one single half step (or semitone); and 2) two Reach steps, two whole steps, and two half steps. The two exceptional interval distributions include: 1) three Reach steps, no whole step, and three half steps; and 2) one augmented Reach step (spanning four half steps), three whole steps, and two half steps.
  • HexaNaTriMin: The name indicates that this is a hexatonality based on the initial Na(tural) harmonics. But it jumps over the major second (or third halftone position) to the tritone and minor sixth. The latter then makes the upper tetrachord PhrygAeolian.
  • Step pattern: Ascending from the fundamental (tonic or Do), an augmented Reach step spanning over four semitones leads to a whole step. Then come two consecutive half steps. Finally two consecutive whole steps lead up to the octave.
  • Scale intervals: Major third, tritone, quint, minor sixth, and minor seventh.
  • Tetrachords: The lower tetrachord is NaTri and the upper is PhrygAeolian.
  • Harmonic axes: There is one axis, which is tilted, ES-WN.
  • Primary harmonic anchors: All four primary anchors are but partially present. The fundamental or North anchor has its head and its right leg only. The East anchor has both legs but no head. The contrasting or South anchor has its head only. And the West anchor has only its right leg.
  • Secondary harmonic anchors: There are no secondary anchors.
  • Moduation potential: Hexatonalities can facilitate modulations. HexaNaTriMin is closely related to ReachNaMin, LydAeolian/HeptaNa, and other NaTri tonalities like HexaNaTriMix and PentaNaTri.
