Characteristics

  • Clustered or melodic tonality matrix: The octave includes five whole steps and two half steps (or semitones). Either one single or a group of four consecutive whole steps, one and four alternating, separate the two half steps from each other. In super-clustered tonalities all five whole steps and also the two half steps are consecutive.
  • PhrygIonian or NaBal: The first name indicates that the lower tetrachord is Phrygian and the upper IonLydian. The second name indicates that this a Na(tural harmonics) tonality with a Bal(anced) or vertically mirrored structure. A.k.a. major over Phrygian (Ma/Phryg).
  • Step pattern: Ascending from the fundamental (tonic or Do), a half step leads to five consecutive whole steps. Then the second half step leads up to the octave.
  • Scale intervals: Minor second, minor third, quart, quint, major sixth and major seventh.
  • Tetrachords: The lower tetrachord is Phrygian and the upper is IonLydian.
  • Harmonic axes: There are three axes evenly spread with one horizontal, NE-SW, E-W, and SE-NW.
  • Primary harmonic anchors: The fundamental or North anchor is fully present. Partially present are the East and West anchors with only their head each, and the contrast or South anchor with its two legs and no head.
  • Secondary harmonic anchors: There are no secondary anchors.
  • PhrygIonian or NaBal is the second destination point of the full Na tonalities progression through the whole of the sequence of natural harmonics. In this full Na progression or modulation path, secondary harmonics build up from TetraNa towards HeptaNa / LydAeolian. Then the secondary harmonics gradually modulate to tertiaries (or reciprocals) towards NaBal / PhrygIonian and may then resolve to PentaBal / PentaMinLa. Below is a detailed graphical modulation path depiction of this progression.
