Tonality of the month: ReachUpMix

The March 2021 tonality of the month is ReachUpMix — a Reach (or harmonic) heptatonality, which is partially anchored.

1) ReachUpMix — sound sample — 0:52 loop — plays until stopped or you go to another page on this tab.
2) ReachUpMix — soundscape with emphasis on the four corners of the sound temple — 8-string guitar and custom gongs — February 2021 — 4:11 — also available as loop (on a new tab), or in an expanded version under Winter 2020/2021

ReachUpMix is an exceptional tonality. It contains all four corners of the sound temple relative to its fundamental. There are but a few others that also have this anchor cross in their footprint. They are BlueMix, ReachUpMaj, and LoReachUpMix. The latter is one of three Reach tonalities, Tonalibus is currently in the process of adding to its catalogue. Though only partially anchored, these special Reach tonalities have considerable, unique harmonic qualities.

You may enjoy a sound sample loop, such as the one of the tonality of the month, as sound mantra for contemplation or meditation, for upliftment, focusing, or simply for relaxation and regeneration as soothing background sound. Further, you could hum or chant along, for example using HU or another mantra, and tune yourself to the fundamental.

February 2021 Tonalibus Update

This February 2021 Tonalibus, Spiritualibus, and Fidibus update includes a brief purpose poem and references new sound samples below.

Recent weeks brought some challenges. For example, Tonalibus experienced and fended off many thousands of hacker attacks from all around the globe. Still, the refinement of this website continues steadily. Also, references to spiritual teachings have been removed based on a specific request.

A first person completed his personal tonalities’ evaluations and work on his fundamental pitch. Based on that, some improvisations came about for that person to listen to and use as he sees fit. This is the service the Fidibus shop offers as individual sound mantra. Besides a simple exercise to find one’s fundamental pitch, this includes a systematic, efficiently focused approach to determine what tonalities resonate most personally. This requires considerable effort by the individual. Then, in the end, we use the results of those efforts musically to create one or more improvisations in the individual’s harmonic context. The word mantra may well invoke a somewhat spiritual connotation. After all, Tonalibus considers harmony and sound as sacred qualities, akin to divine love.

My fundamental aim

My fundamental aim
Consistently was and is to be
Inclusive and not exclusive

Absolute dogma is contrary
To spiritual freedom
Unfoldment and love

To divine spirit and harmony
If ever a leader, then to that

Here and now present
Inner and outer, both
Shedding all holds for good

Grateful for the love
I wish us God speed!

It’s been a long haul! — Thank you for everything.

It works and not

It works and it does not, all at once! So which is it, when it’s both, for and against? Well, how about being neither for nor against — neutral, detached, and free.

It’s necessary to pick a pitch to play. In music or anything whatsoever. Pick a color to paint, to make the first stroke. Take a stance in anything to work with it, whatever it is. Then every following move will be in relation to that first; and each next one to all previous ones. Still, every stroke or move also has the quality of being the first, the freedom to be itself. Or potentially the last one, the concluding point in a cycle of some sorts — big or small, it matters naught. More tuned in at some points, less at others. But always something. A pitch, color, stroke, move, or maybe even the absence of one. The absence of action may show as much or more at times, if placed carefully with patience and heart. Or it can also show a lack of heart; though there is some heart in everything, or it would not exist.

Which of the two are we focusing on?

It works and it does not. Which of the two are we focusing on? One way it will work, the other not. Because we make it so! Also this, however, is not absolute but relative. This follows the law of love and personal space in our dual world. Spiritual freedom allows each their space. As much as one can give others their space, as much one can relish his or her own space. The manifestation of love is in the overlap of space between beings. How much do we have in common? How much overlap do we share? And how much is kept separate?

Again, which of the two are we focusing on? One way can make it work, the other not. By itself it could go either way. Then we make it work — or not. It works and does not, all at the same time. We make it one or the other through our own doing, our attitudes, and our consciousness. Finally, one may just leave it for what it is, neither working, nor not. Being detached and giving each and all their space allows for humbly and effectively claiming and relishing one’s own as soul in spiritual freedom.

Tonality of the month: MinReach

The February 2021 tonality of the month is MinReach or harmonic minor — a Reach (or harmonic) heptatonality.

1) MinReach rhythmic sound sample — 0:31 loop — plays until stopped or you go to another page on this tab.
2) MinReach calm sound sample — 1:40 loop — plays until stopped or you go to another page on this tab.
3) MinReach calm sound sample expanded — includes the Guggisberg melody (more info below) — double 8-string guitar, bass, and crotales — January 2021 — 9:24 soundscape

We can recognize MinReach, also kown as harmonic minor, in the melody of the “Guggisberg-Lied” or “s’Vreneli ab em Guggisberg”. This is one of the most haunting and well-known Swiss folklore songs. It stirred up so much emotion that historically it was forbidden by the death penalty in Bernese regiments in the foreign legion. It tended to cause Swiss soldiers to desert and go home.

January 2021 Tonalibus Update

Tonalibus, Spiritualibus, and Fidibus news —

Holidays and a new dimension of sound sample recordings —

No matter one’s culture or religion, many see Holidays, holy days, as an opportunity to give and receive. Tonalibus recently received a pair of high-quality (entry-level Neumann) microphones. This opened an all new dimension of recording possibilities and settings. Here are some first fruits of this:

“Louder Call for Peace” — Triple and quadruple fujara — January 2020 — 2:40 — (under Winter 2020/2021 available as loop)
“Remembering Boudhanath” — Double tenor recorder, singing saw, genuine Tibetan tingsha cymbals — January 2021 — 3:42 — (under Winter 2020/2021 available as loop)
“Gateway to Heaven and Hell” — Nepali and Tibetan cymbal pairs, gongs — December 31, 2020 — 6:39 soundscape — needs a sound system capable of low sounds. Available as loop and with further instruments under Winter 2020/2021

New format in the catalogue of anchored tonalities

All anchored tonalities in the Tonalibus catalogue now offer easy navigation options. Images of their harmonic properties and sound samples appear first. The laborious capture of their characteristics in words comes last. A growing number of sound sample loops are on a separate page associated with each tonality. Already last month we announced first such additions for ReachMix, BlueMix, and HexaBlue. Since then, a more extensive, multi-track addition came about for PenatProLa / PentaIon:

“Little Balloon” — PentaProLa / PentaIon — multiple 8-string guitar and bass — January 2021 — 3:29 — (available as loop under PentaProLa / PentaIon sound loops or Winter 2020/2021 — also, see associated Spiritualibus blog post “Little Balloon

Spiritualibus and Fidibus update

Consistent with our current times, there has been a flurry of new Spiritualibus blog posts. On the other hand, Fidibus shop activities appear at a minimum.

The Tonalibus course currently in progress with one individual triggered a new harmonic insight touched on in the blog post “Generational interplay of harmony” and anchors in the quint cycle.

The Tonalibus approach to creating individual sound mantras was further refined, including steps accessible on password-protected pages. The key to creating an individual sound mantra, finding one’s fundamental pitch and fitting tonalities, is that — as much as possible — one has to do it themselves. Musically, Tonalibus offers to facilitate and built upon an individual’s own findings.
